Buying a new garage door?

When considering the purchase of a new garage door keep in mind that metal (Aluminum or Steel ) garage doors can dent. If you have a younger family that uses skateboards, basketballs or baseballs keep in mind they don’t bounce well off the face of a metal ( Aluminum or Steel ) garage door.

Buying a new garage door is not always an easy task, you have so many choices a wood garage door, steel garage door, aluminum garage door, one piece garage door, sectional garage door , raised panel garage door flat panel garage door. Well let me help educate you on this subject and help you with this process.

How long can a garage door last?

When buying a garage door, garage door opener or electric gate operator the longevity of the garage door, garage door opener or electric gate operator is not only in the quality of product you buy but more important in the installation of that product. Buying a garage door, garage door operator or electric gate operator is making a small investment into the beatification and convenience of your home. And having the right installation is also providing for the longevity of the product as well as the safety to your family.

A garage door can last a long time (25 to 70 years) if you take care of it. But if you live by the ocean salt air is not easy on any surface of a garage door. Wood or steel garage doors take more abuse from the salt air. Steel garage doors can rust and wood garage doors need to be well painted to help keep the moisture out. Even if you live inland depending on how much sun your garage door gets.

Painting a garage door

You will need to paint your garage door at the first sign that your paint is checking or cracking. Do not paint the inside of your garage door, it only adds weight to the garage door there not any other value in painting the backside of a garage door. When painting your garage door try to paint the garage doors in early summer or late fall before the rains come. Garage door through the course of a winter can absorb one to four gallons of water and that water dose not evaporate fast with the first sign of sun.

Keep in mind as well that wood garage doors get heavier as they get older. A gallon of water weights eight pounds a gallon of paint weights about twelve pounds. Each time you paint your garage door your adding weight to that garage door and that’s why after twenty or thirty years you need to replace your garage door springs with larger garage door springs to help counter balance the weight of the garage door.

Tips on Painting a Garage Door

Most quality steel doors come with a baked on polyester enamel coating. To finish the door, the following procedures are recommended. To improve the adhesion of the paint, lightly sand the door’s surface with a fine steel wool to reduce gloss (STEEL WOOL ONLY). Do not expose bare metal. Any exposed bare metal be coated with a primer specifically intended for galvanized metal. Clean your door with a phosphate free laundry detergent. Rinse the door thoroughly with clean water and let dry completely before painting. Solvents are not recommended for cleaning. DO NOT PAINT IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT ~or~ IF THE DOOR SURFACE IS WARM TO THE TOUCH. Dark colors are not recommended where the door is exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods, such as a southern to western exposure. Dark colors absorb and retain the heat. A top coating of a high quality Rust-Oleum brand paint is recommended for the door. At this point, care must be exercised not to paint joint and edge seals, in that, surfaces painted and pressed against the seal will adhere and cause seal damage. Also, to ensure the finish paint is compatible, always paint sample area to test adhesion. Finally, check your paint manufacturer’s instructions carefully for any additional recommendations and future maintenance requirements.

I want or need windows on my garage door?

When out on sales calls for new garage doors it seems woman like garage door windows more then men. I understand their point of view of wanting some natural light when walking into a darken garage. Some people keep their refrigerator or washer and dryer in the garage and the windows make it feel safer or more comfortable to walk into a garage. They also add a nice appeal to the front of a home as well. Keep in mind windows do take away some strength from a garage door and it does make it easier for anyone to look into your garage to see if your home or if there’s something good to steal. If you have a good alarm system I guest that could take care of that.

If you have a short driveway

Sectional garage doors are really the way to go. You don’t have to worry if someone is parking in front of the garage door because the sectional garage doors lift straight up. Parking in front of your garage door mite even give you an extra parking space for yourself or guests.

How much can I expect to spend on a new garage door?

For a 16 x 7 steel sectional garage door you will spend around $ 650.00 to $ 750.00 on the average for a pan door. Add about $ 100.00 to insulate that door and for a steel back sectional about $ 1000.00 should cover it.

Steel Section Garage Doors

Steel sectional garage doors are great there affordable they come painted. These garage doors weighs about 200 pounds. Comes in colors of white, almond and brown. They come in 24, 25 and 26 gage they also come insulated and as an option with a steel back witch makes for a very strong door.

Upside to buying this garage door:
  • You gain headroom clearance for taller vehicles
  • You need no clearance in front of your garage door for opening.
  • The raised panel design is very modern over the rib style aluminum garage door.
Downside to this door:
  • Replacing sectional garage door springs cost more over one-piece garage doors because it takes more time.
  • The quality of paint is not as good as on the aluminum garage doors.
  • It is more important to have a quality installation then to by what you think is a quality door.

Wood sectional garage doors For a 16 x 7 starts at about $ 1400.00 on up depending on the type of wood your choosing. Keep in mind you also have to add the cost of painting the garage door after it’s installed.

Wood Sectional Garage Door

Wood sectional garage doors are durable great to look at but cost two to three time that of a steel sectional garage door. If you have a young family or might at some time rent out your home, these doors are difficult to damage. Upside to buying this garage door:

  • These garage doors are strong
  • They come in many styles and window types
  • Can last for a life time
Downside to this garage door:
  • You need to paint the garage door when needed
If you stain the garage door, you need to varnish it at lest two times a year. The best times would be October before the winter and rain and then in May or June before the heat of summer. Aluminum one piece garage doors

For a 16 x 7 are about $ 795.00 keep in mind that aluminum cost more then steel so that why your paying the extra money.

Aluminum Garage Doors

Why should the largest door in your home be the heaviest! A 16' x 7' Aluminum garage door weighs about one hundred pounds. The door comes with a baked on enamel paint in you have 3 choices of white, 3 choices of brown, a green, a golden-yellow. Rubber weather-strip on the bottom and sides of the garage door is standard. With new hardware and spring this door would and could last a lifetime.

Upside to buying this door :
  • Never needs to be painted this is a great door in desert areas as well as areas close to the beach sense it does not rust.
  • Seals well on the bottom and sides to prevent leaves dust and dirt in the garage. The bottom of this door can be cut to accommodate a sloped garage floor.
  • These garage doors will never termite.
Downside to this door:
  • This garage door is not a good garage door if you have a young family, basketball hoop above garage because this garage door can dent.
Where not to buy a garage door?

You can check on the web for dissatisfied customers but it seems most of them come from people buying garage doors and garage door openers from the HOME DEPOT, LOWES and SEARS. There work is sub contracted out (in most cases) when you get finished buying the product paying for the extra parts paying for the installation paying for the service contract and of course the tax you probably paid more money then if you just went to a garage door company that specializes in installing and repairing and you would have gotten the installation much faster. The home building and department stores get you in because of the conveyance of there credit cards after your order then all the in conveyance start. So call us or any other garage door company A lot the garage door companies take credit cards too.

Garage Door Safety

Garage door safety should be on everyone’s mind. You may not read about the deaths and injuries that are caused at home from garage door openers, broken garage doors, garage door springs, garage door hardware and sectional garage doors but they happen. Always be in full sight of the garage door when opening and closing the garage door. Keep all moving parts on the garage door and hardware oiled and keep up the inspections for loose or broken parts. Educate your children as to the dangers of garage doors just like you do with the stove and refrigerator. Garage door safety should be number one keep your family safe. Have your garage door professional service at least every 5 years.
